3 cleanup events + 236 volunteers = 7,000 pounds of litter collected

Our clocks have sprung forward. The sun stays out past dinner. And the bugs are coming out of hiding. How is it possible that the first quarter of the year has already come and gone?

It’s spring, meaning it’s time for us to give a much-earned round of applause to all the volunteers who came out to support their community and the Lowcountry.

In total, 236 volunteers collected just shy of 7,000 pounds of litter at three separate cleanup events in our community – the Angel Oak Preserve, West Ashley Bikeway and Greenways and Northbridge Park. We combined our efforts with several community partners, including Charleston Waterkeeper, Keep Charleston Beautiful, Boeing, Charleston Moves, Lowcountry Marsh Sweepers and Frothy Beard Brewing, to have a greater impact on these efforts. Check out some of the photos below.

If you’re hosting your own cleanup throughout the year, be sure to enter your data on Anecdata, an online citizen science portal. We post all of our data in the Litter-free Digital Journal, a project page that is hosted by the South Carolina Aquarium. Their goal for the Litter-free Digital Journal “is to promote collaborative solutions by tracking and removing plastics and other types of refuse from both terrestrial and marine habitats throughout South Carolina.”
