BALLOT MEASURES FOR CONSERVATION
On November 8, 2022, Dorchester County residents will have the opportunity to vote on the renewal of a 1% tax used for financing the cost of local greenbelt initiatives. This special tax program will allow for the continued protection of County land, water, and wildlife while creating additional public places for outdoor recreation.

GET TO KNOW THE BALLOT: FAQS

What is a greenbelt and why is it important?

“Greenbelt” is a general term that refers to natural, undeveloped, and agricultural land that surrounds urban areas.

Protecting and improving our water quality, natural lands, rural areas, rivers, and wildlife habitats will preserve Dorchester County’s natural beauty and quality of life for future generations so our children and grandchildren can enjoy them the same way we do.

Why is the ballot measure necessary and what are the benefits?

Dorchester County is one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States. To balance the immense development pressures, we must protect the area’s water quality, wildlife habitats, and special places.

If passed/approved, critical natural, agricultural, and forestry lands that conserve these important environmental components, such as the Ashley River corridor, Pine Trace, Davis-Bailey, and Rosebrock Parks, will be protected forever.

Will voting in favor of the program increase Dorechester County tax rates?

No. This proposal is not a new tax, just a renewal of the existing transportation and greenbelt sales tax at the same rate  – using some of the funds to conserve land.

What accountability measures does this program entail?

This proposal has strict accountability measures including full public disclosure of all project spending as well as an annual public audit of how the funds would be spent.

How do I vote?
