SUMMARY:Picnic in YOUR Backyard
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to our first ever Picnic in YOUR Backyard!  \n(No need to put out the welcome mat\, we promise not to join you.) \nFor 33 years\, Lowcountry Land Trust has hosted an Annual Spring Picnic\, where supporters gathered on a protected property to celebrate conservation milestones and the beauty that is the Lowcountry in the Spring. This year\, we would be celebrating the work completed in 2019\, where Lowcountry Land Trust protected seven properties in four counties\, totaling 3\,402 acres of protected land. This brings our total protected acreage up to more than 147\,000 acres of protected land in the state! We would also be recognizing the landowners who worked with the Land Trust to make these protections possible. \nThe 2020 Annual Spring Picnic was planned for Saturday\, May 2 at Sheldon Farms on Wadmalaw Island. Since we are unable to picnic together this year\, we need your help to make our first Picnic in your Backyard a success. Children and pets are welcome and this event is rain or shine!  \nTo take part in this virtual gathering\, we ask that\, anytime throughout the month of May\, you pack a spread and take it outside. Pick any day\, any time\, to gather with your loved ones for a picnic in your backyard. If you do not have a backyard\, no problem! Picnic outside\, on your balcony\, on your front porch\, on a patch of green. The goal is to get outside and enjoy Spring in the Lowcountry. Make it a virtual Derby Party picnic and wear your finest hats. Or celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Mexican fare. Perhaps make a fabulous picnic spread for the mom in your life. SUMMARY:ROXBURY PARK OYSTER REEF BUILD
DESCRIPTION:Join Lowcountry Land Trust as we team up with DNR’s South Carolina Oyster Restoration and Enhancement Program (SCORE) and Edisto Island Open Land Trust to build an oyster reef at Roxbury Park\, a Land Trust protected property owned by the Town of Meggett. Volunteers will help restore and enhance oyster habitat by planting recycled oyster shells in the intertidal environment to form new\, self-sustaining oyster reefs. All reef building materials will be provided\, as well as gloves\, bug spray\, and sunscreen. Volunteers should wear closed toed shoes\, clothes they don’t mind getting dirty (because you will get muddy!)\, and bring a reusable water bottle. Volunteers will be in muddy conditions as they assist in transporting hundreds of oyster shell bags to build the reefs. \nVolunteers must be 11 or older. Any volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a volunteer waiver. \nThe purpose of the SCORE program is to restore and enhance oyster habitat by planting recycled oyster shells in the intertidal environment to form new\, self-sustaining oyster reefs — all with the help of volunteers. This community-based habitat restoration project is an important endeavor because oysters play a significant ecologic and economic role in South Carolina; however\, oyster populations are declining. It is important for the community to understand how oysters improve water quality\, control erosion\, and provide habitat for other commercially-important shellfish and fish species by learning about their biology and the human activities that can influence their well being.
