Alge Island Kayak Cleanup

April 24 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

As a celebration of Lowcountry Earth Month, community members are invited to participate in a kayak cleanup of Alge Island, a property that led to the organization of Lowcountry Land Trust in 1986.

In 1986, Mr. Bill Alge was worried about the sale and potential development of a 20-acre island behind his West Ashley neighborhood. He rallied his neighbors, and their grassroots effort led to the formation of Lowcountry Land Trust and the protection of the island, now named Alge Island. They saved the scenic views of the Stono River and the island’s ecosystem from development while showcasing how fee-simple acquisitions are effective conservation tools.
Lowcountry Land Trust’s mission is to connect the community to conservation. We invite environmental enthusiasts to paddle the property’s perimeter and help keep its surrounding waterway (a tributary to the Stono River) clean this Earth Month!

Date: Friday, April 24

Time: 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Location: 418 Owen St, Charleston, SC 29414

Lowcountry Land Trust and event partners will provide kayaks, life jackets, paddles, and all trash cleanup supplies. We recommend wearing weather-appropriate clothing and bringing a water bottle, sunscreen, and bug spray. Spots are limited – all participants must register ahead of time.

Thank you to our event supporters who made this Lowcountry Earth Month cleanup event possible: Coastal Expeditions, Evans General Contractors, and Keep Charleston Beautiful. Community is at the heart of conservation!
