Oyster Shell Recycling at Lowcountry Oyster Festival

January 27, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 5:30 pm

We’re teaming up with Coastal Conservation Association and Charleston Waterkeeper to collect shells at the Lowcountry Oyster Festival, the world’s largest oyster festival. All shells collected at this event will be recycled through DNR’s oyster shell recycling program and will eventually be used to prep bags of oyster shell for building reefs with DNR’s SCORE program. Everyone should wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you do not mind getting a little dirty. We will provide water, sunscreen, first aid, and bug spray and we encourage volunteers to be eco-friendly and bring a reusable water bottle for drinking. Volunteers need to bring their own gloves.

Volunteers will receive complimentary admission to the Lowcountry Oyster Festival, as well as a t-shirt, lunch and snacks, with their two hour volunteer shift. Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age to participate and be accompanied by an adult.

NOTE: Morning volunteer shifts are full. Please join us to help collect shells in the afternoon!
