Meet Summer Land Stewardship Intern Izzy Boulware

We are excited to introduce Izzy Boulware, one of Lowcountry Land Trust’s four dedicated summer interns. Originally from the Lowcountry, Izzy is pursuing a Biology degree with a concentration in Ecology and Conservation at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Her passion for the region and education brought her to our organization, and she’s already making a significant impact. “As a Charleston local, I have witnessed the significant changes in our city and the Lowcountry over the years and the effects on the ecosystems and their services,” Izzy stated.

Izzy discovered the Land Stewardship Intern position through The Ebb and Flow Blog, where she saw an announcement for summer opportunities. “I read through the job posting and the mission, and I felt like it would be a great fit for me,” Izzy shared. Her alignment with our mission is evident in her enthusiasm, long-time email subscribership, and field of studies.

Izzy’s passion for community engagement aligns perfectly with our values. “I am a huge advocate for community-based organizations, and Lowcountry Land Trust embodies this perfectly,” she explained. “I feel like the best way to make a change locally is to involve the surrounding communities and engage and educate.” Her belief in the power of community mirrors our own, making her a valuable asset to our team.

As our Land Stewardship intern, Izzy’s role involves frequent monitoring visits to our conservation easements alongside Krista Schmidt, Lowcountry Land Trust’s Stewardship Associate. In addition, Izzy is helping digitize the baseline document reports of our properties, contributing to the long-term sustainability of our conservation efforts.

One of Izzy’s favorite experiences so far has been the monitoring visits. “When I went on my first visit, I loved meeting with the landowner and hearing how invested and thoughtful he was about his land,” she recounted. “I’m looking forward to doing more visits and meeting more landowners!” Her enthusiasm for engaging with landowners and understanding their connection to the land highlights the personal touch that is so important in conservation and land stewardship work.

Izzy believes that her internship at Lowcountry Land Trust will have a lasting impact on her academic and career journey. “I believe that after working with Lowcountry Land Trust, I will have a better understanding of community-based efforts and grasp the ideals of a non-profit organization in the Lowcountry,” she said. She is eager to apply the knowledge and skills she gains this summer to her final year at university and beyond.

We will be accepting intern applications for next summer in February 2025. If you would like to receive more information about upcoming internships when they become available, please sign up for our email list.
