Labor Day Weekend in the Lowcountry

Labor Day weekend in the Lowcountry offers more than just backyard grilling. Lowcountry Land Trust has assembled our picks for an immersive, adventurous weekend featuring both guided and solo options to savor the last few days of summer and spend them outdoors.

VISIT THE ANGEL OAK

A visit to the Angel Oak Tree on Johns Island speaks to the values set forth by Labor Day. This timeless tree has persisted against many challenges over its hundreds of years and resonates with laborers’ struggles that inspired the origins of this holiday. LLT protects the 35-acre property surrounding this Lowcountry icon and is working to highlight this immersive, ambassador site for environmental conservation.

FLOAT DOWN THE EDISTO

Experience river tubing along North America’s longest free-flowing body of black water, the Edisto River. Drop in your float of choice along the riverbanks at Givhans Ferry State Park in Ridgeville and float for about 2-3 hours until you reach the T.W. Messervy Boat Landing. Don’t forget to park a car at both ends! Edisto River Adventures makes the experience simpler by providing shuttle services and tubes to groups.

PADDLE ALONG SALT MARSHES AND ESTUARIES

Tucked away on Bowens Island is an effortless spot to launch your kayaks and paddleboards into the local waterways surrounding Folly Beach. This excursion provides unparalleled views of Lowcountry wildlife, including: dolphins, osprey, sea turtles, and pelicans in their natural habitats. Don’t have your own equipment? Check out Charleston Outdoor Adventures onsite for rentals and guided tours.

VISIT CAPE ROMAIN NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

The Lowcountry Land Trust team recently spent a day visiting Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, and we couldn’t recommend it more. Drop your boat in at Awendaw’s Garris Landing Public Boat Ramp to experience a breathtaking Class 1 Wilderness area. Coastal Expeditions also offers private charters and ferry transportation to Bulls Island within Cape Romain from this spot.

TAKE A NATURE HIKE IN YOUR FAVORITE COUNTY PARK

The Lowcountry’s nature hike offerings are endless, with some LLT-favorites resting at Caw Caw Interprative Center, Laurel Hill County Park, Stono River County Park, and the newly announced Old Towne Creek County Park. Check out public parks in Beaufort, BerkeleyCharleston, Colleton, DorchesterGeorgetown, and more this weekend!
