This April, nearly 400 people gathered in the heart of the ACE Basin for Lowcountry Land Trust’s 2026 Spring Gathering. Lowcountry Land Trust extends its gratitude to hosts David Wise and Morgan Cole Wise, who welcomed guests to Hobonny Plantation. The property spans 1,300 acres and features historic tabby structures and acres of working rice fields controlled by canals and rice trunks. Adjacent to the Combahee River, it was a stunning backdrop for this annual event.
Guests gathered to enjoy a classic southern meal by Peculiar Pig, soak in the ACE Basin views, and raise a glass to conservation in the Lowcountry. During the event, Matt Williams (President & CEO), Bob Perry (Board Chair), and Ann Kulze (It Can’t Wait Campaign Chair) shared inspiring updates about Lowcountry Land Trust. Surrounded by many conservation supporters, it was the perfect moment to celebrate the campaign’s momentum so far.
Highlights from the event also included a rice culture talk by Travis Folk (Trustee), fly-casting demonstrations and instruction from Haddrell’s, bluegrass music by Boonie Bevins Music, and a competitive silent auction full of local items and experiences – fun for the whole family! Over 30 volunteers assisted with many aspects of the event, from parking to kids’ activities and tours to waste-sorting stations.
Thanks to the Wise family’s stewardship, Hobonny Plantation supports the broader health and historic preservation of the ACE Basin, providing conserved habitat for a range of wildlife, including waterfowl, wading birds, alligators, and even a bald eagle pair that has been returning to the same nest on the property for over 10 years. Lowcountry Land Trust is grateful for their hospitality, and enjoyed celebrating conservation with each guest and their families at Hobonny Plantation.
